Success Rates in IVF: What You Need to Know Before Starting Treatment

Kolkata : In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) has become a widely used and successful treatment for infertility, but understanding success rates is crucial before embarking on the journey. Success rates in IVF can vary significantly based on several factors, and it’s important for patients to have realistic expectations before beginning treatment.

Dr. Sonali Mandal Bandyopadhyaya, IVF specialist at Birla Fertility & IVF, Howrah, emphasizes the importance of personalized care: ‘IVF success rates depend on factors like age, embryo quality, and underlying health conditions. Younger women typically have higher success rates due to better egg quality, while advanced techniques like PGT can improve outcomes for older patients or those with genetic risks.’

One of the most important factors influencing IVF success is age. Younger women generally have higher success rates due to better egg quality, which is vital for embryo development. As women age, the quality and quantity of their eggs decrease, which can lower the likelihood of success. Studies show that women under 35 have a success rate of approximately 40% to 45% per IVF cycle, while women over 40 experience a marked decrease, with success rates falling to 10% to 15%.

Embryo quality is another critical factor. High-quality embryos have a better chance of implantation and resulting in a successful pregnancy. Advanced techniques like Preimplantation Genetic Testing (PGT) can help improve outcomes, particularly for older patients or those at risk of passing on genetic disorders. PGT allows doctors to screen embryos for genetic issues, ensuring that only the healthiest embryos are implanted, thus increasing the chances of a successful pregnancy.

“At Birla Fertility & IVF, we prioritize transparency and personalized care, offering realistic expectations and tailored protocols. Success isn’t just about statistics—it’s about optimizing every patient’s chances through expertise, advanced technology, and emotional support,” adds Dr. Sonali.

Understanding these factors and working closely with fertility specialists to develop a tailored treatment plan can significantly improve the chances of IVF success, making the dream of parenthood more achievable.
