Kolkata, 5th March, 2025 : Jagannath Gupta Institute of Medical Sciences & Hospital (JIMSH) proudly presents ‘Operation Straight Spine‘ (OSS) and the ‘Kolkata Spine Deformity Surgery Workshop’—a pioneering humanitarian initiative that unites world-renowned spine surgeons, anesthetists, and specialized medical professionals to provide life-changing care, especially for those who would otherwise lack access to such specialized treatment.
This multi-disciplinary mission has brought esteemed international experts to Kolkata, Dr. Alaaeldin Ahmad (Palestine), Prof. (Dr.) Massimo Balsano (Italy), Dr. Girish Swamy (UK), Dr. Naveen C. Murali (UK), and other medical professionals such as Jacqueline Critchley, Cherry, Jadjie Promilda and Sergio Cecchelli (UK), have traveled to Kolkata to offer their expertise and conduct free surgeries for these children. Their selfless contribution underscores the mission’s core values of compassion and healing.
Prof. (Dr.) Ujjwal Debnath, Professor & HOD, Department of Orthopaedics at JIMSH, and Chairman of OSS, also played a pivotal role in facilitating this incredible event. The initiative has already changed the lives of 12 children, with 11 of them hailing from West Bengal. Many needy children, like Adrija Majumdar, an 8-year-old girl, have benefited immensely from this legendary and humanitarian vision of the initiative. Adrija, along with many others, has received the life-changing opportunity to stand tall and regain hope for a brighter future, thanks to the OSS mission.
The surgeries performed through OSS are intricate and highly precise, lasting between 6 to 10 hours and aim to restore mobility, dignity, and a sense of normalcy to those who desperately need it. These procedures provide more than just physical healing; they offer emotional restoration as well, giving children the chance to live fulfilling lives.
