Green Catalysts Explore the Hidden Wonders of East Kolkata Wetlands on World Environment Day 2026

Kolkata, June 05, 2026: As the city awakened on World Environment Day 2026, a group of enthusiastic young people set out on an interesting journey through the unique landscapes of the East Kolkata Wetlands (EKW), one of the world’s largest natural resource recovery ecosystems and a lifeline for Kolkata’s environmental health.

To mark the occasion, CINI in collaboration with Wipro Foundation organized an exciting Nature and Photo Walk, bringing together community youth to experience the biodiversity, and ecological significance of this internationally recognized wetland ecosystem (Ramsar-designated “Wetland of International Importance”).

With cameras, and curiosity for nature, participants explored the wetlands’ rich habitats, observed birds, insects, reptiles and aquatic life, and mammals, captured stunning natural landscapes, and learned how these wetlands quietly protect the city by filtering wastewater, supporting livelihoods, conserving biodiversity, and helping mitigate the impacts of climate change.

The initiative aimed to connect young people, especially belonging to the underprivileged community, with nature at a time when environmental degradation, pollution, and climate change increasingly threaten critical ecosystems. Through experiential learning and observation, participants gained a deeper understanding of why protecting wetlands is essential not only for biodiversity but also for building a sustainable and climate-resilient future.

“The East Kolkata Wetlands are more than just a wetland, they are a dynamic learning environment and a powerful nature-based solution to climate change. By engaging young people directly with such ecosystems, we hope to inspire a new generation of environmental stewards,” said a CINI representative.

The event also encouraged participants to tell environmental stories through photography and inspiring greater appreciation for the natural resources that often go unnoticed amidst urban life.

On this special day, CINI reiterates its commitment to empowering children and young people to lead environmental action and champion the protection of natural resources that sustain communities, strengthen climate resilience, and safeguard our collective future.
