On the occasion of Swami Dayananda Saraswati‘s birth bicentenary, ‘Arya Samaj’ has taken initiative to highlight the heritage of Kolkata.
It is not known to many people that the first widow marriage took place in this Tilottama Kolkata metropolis under police guard. If you wish, you can visit the historic place with the help of ‘Arya Samaj’ members.
When Pandit Ishwarchandra Vidyasagar was fighting for the favor of widow marriage, Vidyasagar‘s initiative was disliked and opposed by most of the Hindus. At that time he referred to ‘Parashar Samhita’. Most of the Hindu people then said that it was written by Vidyasagar himself and propagated in the name of Parashar Rishi.
Swami Dayananda Saraswati was one of the well-wishers who were by Vidyasagar’s side at that time. This year the bicentenary of the birth of Swami Dayananda Saraswati is being celebrated. On that occasion, Arya Samaj has planned and is going to organize a tour of several traditional places in Kolkata.
Within a few hours, all such landmarks and traditional places of Kolkata will be shown around. Note that the tour will start from the place where the widow was married first. After that, divided into small groups, there will be an opportunity to visit various places within seven kilometers on foot or in the car of your choice.
It should be noted in this context that Kolkata was once the capital of British India. At that time, the independence movement was so intense in this city that the British were forced to move the capital to Delhi. Kolkata was also the cultural capital of the subcontinent. And from here started the fight for social reform one after another.
The founder of ‘Arya Samaj’, Swami Dayananda Saraswati played a major role in social reform. That reform sometimes took a turn towards independence movements as well. Apart from reforming Hindu society, he also started campaigning on cow protection. So age is no barrier, that’s why everyone from 8 to 80 years old is welcome on this tour.
On the way you will find Kaligodam, this hundred year old sweet shop will serve Rasgolla, Pantua, Sandesh, sweet Curd etc.
This heritage tour can be done on foot, in your own car or by bus or tram. For this, you only need to appear at a certain place on a certain day. It has been informed that this tour will be started on March 3rd , 7 am, from 19, Bidhan Sarani, Kolkata-700006.
There will be 100 representatives of ‘Arya Samaj’ to show a total of 15 places in Kolkata. So you can travel alone or in a group with someone. And if you are tired, you can go back after walking around for a while. You will enjoy all the freedom in your own way.
At the end of the destination there will be a quiz competition with light refreshments by 11:00 am. Participation in this quiz competition is not mandatory, but if you participate and win, you will get a prize. Each participant will receive a medal.
