In the Agriculture category, Ramprasad Sarkar from Kolkata was honoured for his decades-long commitment to rural development and sustainable farming. At the age of 18, inspired by Rabindranath Tagore’s philosophy of rural self-reliance and community service, Ramprasad chose to work directly with his village people instead of pursuing a conventional career.
Witnessing the hardships caused by poverty, poor nutrition, and natural disasters, he began promoting sustainable agriculture, nutrition gardens, and women’s empowerment. Over the past 35 years, he has worked independently to build awareness, improve livelihoods, and strengthen environmental resilience in the Sundarbans. His commitment to grassroots transformation, rather than personal gain, continues to guide his journey as a dedicated social worker.
