What is ‘Basan?’
Weaving has been recognized as an ancient art form across the world. Dating back to the Indus Civilizations of ancient India, textile production has evolved through the ages to present-day India, establishing itself as one of the most reliable professions. Among the various textile industries, handloom weaving holds significant importance. The Gangetic textile Muslin was renowned worldwide and enjoyed huge demand in Rome. ‘Basan’ aims to explore and understand the relevance, dynamics, and trends of the handloom industry’s growth. It delves into the condition of the handloom industry, particularly during British rule and the post-independence period in India.
‘Basan’ analyses and presents the rise and fall of this notable industry. Despite the current challenges facing the handloom sector, the advent of power looms has provided some stability. The concept of ‘Basan’ was conceived to honor the art of weaving and the weavers who have contributed to this rich heritage.
