Dr Debabrata Sen Takes Ayurveda to the Grassroots, Promotes Rural Livelihoods in Eastern India

Kolkata, February 26, 2026: In a significant step towards making Ayurveda accessible at the grassroots level and linking traditional knowledge with sustainable livelihoods, eminent Ayurvedacharya of West Bengal, Dr Debabrata Sen, visited a remote village, Hapaniya village in Eastern India to create awareness among rural communities about the relevance of Ayurveda in everyday life.

Addressing a gathering of men and women villagers, Dr Sen spoke at length on how Ayurveda is not merely a system of treatment but a holistic way of living that can be seamlessly integrated into daily routines. His interaction focused on simple, practical applications of Ayurvedic principles that villagers could adopt to improve overall health and well-being.

What made the initiative particularly impactful was Dr Sen’s emphasis on Ayurveda as a potential source of supplementary income for farmers. He explained that after the traditional cultivation and harvesting of crops, unused agricultural land could be effectively utilised for growing Ayurvedic medicinal plants. These plants, he pointed out, have a steady demand and can be sold to verified buyers, thereby opening up an additional revenue stream for rural households.

Dr Sen also highlighted that these medicinal plants could be used by the villagers themselves for basic treatments, reducing dependency on expensive medicines and strengthening self reliance in healthcare. He assured the farmers that they would be guided at every stage — from sourcing quality saplings to identifying reliable markets for selling the produce.

As part of his long-term vision, Dr Sen committed to providing necessary training to the villagers on cultivation methods, basic processing and understanding the medicinal value of the plants. He also informed the gathering that he plans to visit Hapaniya village at regular intervals to monitor progress, interact with farmers and offer continuous support.

The initiative was widely appreciated by the villagers, who saw it as an opportunity to combine traditional wisdom with economic empowerment. Dr Sen’s effort reflects a broader mission to revive Ayurveda in rural Bengal, not just as a healthcare practice but as a sustainable livelihood model rooted in local resources and knowledge.

By taking Ayurveda directly to villages like Hapaniya, Dr Debabrata Sen continues to bridge the gap between ancient science and modern rural needs, reinforcing the role of Ayurveda in building healthier and economically resilient communities.
