Abha Surgy Centre Hosts Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Session For Children of Sex Workers in Sonagachi

Kolkata, December 02, 2025: Abha Surgy Centre, organised a Menstrual Hygiene Awareness Session for the children of sex workers in Sonagachi in association with the NGO, Amra Padatik. The initiative, aimed at fostering health, dignity, and strengthening community welfare, was held in the esteemed presence of Dr Bani Kumar Mitra, Founder & Chief Consultant, Abha Surgy Centre, Dr Konkon Das Mitra, Director & Chief Embryologist, Abha Surgy Centre and the members of Amra Padatik. The session concluded with a soulful musical performance by eminent singer Lagnajita Chakraborty, adding warmth and encouragement in the afternoon.

The initiative focused on creating awareness around menstrual health, personal hygiene and basic gynaecological understanding through age-appropriate and empathetic dialogue. Additionally, Abha Surgy Centre distributed hygiene kits to over 100 participants, ensuring that each child received essential sanitary supplies and educational materials. Doctors of Abha Surgy Centre were present to answer queries of the participants related to menstrual hygiene.

Abha Surgy Centre and Amra Padatik reiterated the importance of sustained outreach, consistent education, and supportive interventions for children living in vulnerable situations, recognising the importance of collaboration between healthcare institutions and grassroots organisations.

Menstrual hygiene remains one of the most commonly overlooked aspects of women’s health, especially in marginalised areas. Through this programme, we hope not only to educate but also to empower these young girls. The aim is to help them build confidence, understand their bodies better and make informed choices that will benefit them throughout their lives”, said Dr Konkon Das Mitra, Director & Chief Embryologist, Abha Surgy Centre, emphasising the importance of such interventions.

Going ahead, Abha Surgy Centre plans to conduct similar menstrual hygiene awareness sessions across different locations, including schools, continuing its mission to promote health, dignity and empowerment at the grassroots level for community well-being.
