MP Birla Memorial Award 2025 Conferred on Prof. Yashwant Gupta

Kolkata, March 13, 2026 : The MP Birla Memorial Award 2025 was conferred upon renowned astrophysicist Prof. Yashwant Gupta, Distinguished Professor and Centre Director at the National Centre for Radio Astrophysics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Pune, at a special ceremony held at the iconic MP Birla Planetarium.

Instituted in 1993 to commemorate the legacy of the late Syt. M.P. Birla, founder of the planetarium, the biennial award is among the most respected recognitions in the field of Astronomy, Astrophysics, Space Sciences and related disciplines. Prof. Gupta was selected for his pioneering work in Radio Astronomy and his contributions to advancing research and institutional development in the field.

The award was presented by the MP Birla Institute of Fundamental Research, under whose aegis the Planetarium functions, in the presence of leading scientists, academicians and members of the scientific community.

SK Daga, Honorary Secretary of the institute said, “Prof. Gupta’s dedication to advancing our understanding of the universe truly embodies the spirit of the M.P. Birla Memorial Award.”

Mr. S Datta, Curator, M P Birla Planetarium said, “His research has not only opened new. avenues for scientific inquiry but has also provided solutions that will benefit the advancement of human knowledge. We are thrilled to present him with this well-deserved recognition.”

Receiving the award, Prof. Yashwant Gupta said, “I am deeply honoured to receive the M. P. Birla Memorial Award. The ceremony celebrated Prof. Gupta’s outstanding contributions to Radio Astronomy and his leadership in advancing major scientific initiatives in India.
