Abdominal Pain Turns Out to Be Heart Attack: Fortis Anandapur Saves 77-Year-Old Man with Advanced Cardiac Care

Kolkata, February 20, 2026: In an unusual reported case, Fortis Hospital, Anandpur successfully treated a 77-year-old man, suffering from sudden hypotension and abdominal discomfort, an unusual but clinically significant symptom that ultimately pointed to an underlying cardiac emergency. The complex case was managed by a multidisciplinary team led by Dr Shuvanan Ray, Director & Chief of Interventional Cardiology, Fortis Hospital, Anandapur underscoring the importance of high clinical suspicion and timely collaboration across specialties in saving lives.

The patient was initially admitted under the gastroenterology team of the hospital for evaluation of abdominal symptoms. However, during routine investigations, an Echocardiography was done, which revealed that a part of the heart was not functioning normally. This was followed by a detailed heart vessel test that revealed severe blockage and hardening of one of the main arteries supplying blood to the heart. Further evaluation confirmed the diagnosis of acute coronary syndrome. As the blockage involved a long stretch of a narrow artery, placing multiple long stents was avoided because it could increase the risk of complications in the future. Open-heart bypass surgery was also ruled out, as the affected artery beyond the blockage was too small and weak to support surgery. Doctors also identified that the patient’s abdominal pain was actually a warning sign of heart disease—a presentation commonly seen in diabetic patients, where typical chest pain may not occur.

Dr Shuvanan Ray, Director & Chief of Interventional Cardiology, Fortis Hospital, Anandapur said, “This case was particularly challenging because the patient presented with abdominal discomfort rather than typical chest pain, which is a known but often overlooked warning sign of heart disease in diabetic patients. Early recognition and timely collaboration between teams helped us identify the cardiac emergency. Given the complexity of the blockage and the patient’s age, we adopted a carefully planned approach that avoided unnecessary long stents or open-heart surgery. By using advanced techniques, we were able to restore blood flow safely and effectively. The patient has responded very well to the treatment, and we expect a good long-term outcome.”

Ashish Mukherjee, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital Anandapur said, “This complex intervention highlights Fortis Hospital, Anandapur’s commitment to delivering cutting-edge, patient-centric cardiac care. Backed by a highly experienced team of cardiology specialists and advanced interventional infrastructure, the hospital continues to achieve outstanding outcomes even in the most challenging cardiac cases.”
