Fortis Kolkata Performs Complex Open-Heart Surgery on 53-Year-Old Bhutanese Woman to Treat Rare Heart Tumour

Kolkata, December 05, 2025: In a remarkable display of cardiac expertise and coordinated multidisciplinary care, doctors at Fortis Hospital, Anandapur successfully performed a highly complex open-heart surgery on a 53-year-old woman from Bhutan, who was diagnosed with a rare and massive tumour inside her heart. The tumour, measuring 8x8x7 cm, had a balloon-like bulge which had occupied almost the entire chamber of her heart. The multidisciplinary team of doctors led by Dr. K. M. Mandana, Director- Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery, Fortis Hospital Anandapur performed a complex open-heart surgery and the patient was discharged in a stable condition.

Upon admission at Fortis Anandapur, an advanced imaging including cardiac MRI and CT pulmonary angiography was performed which revealed bulging of the aorta near the heart. Several of her heart vessels that carry blood away from the heart had become thick and narrow, impairing smooth blood flow. In addition, she had a mild leak of one of the heart valves – where a small amount of blood flowed backwards, along with narrowing of another valve, which made it further difficult for blood to exit the heart normally. This caused a distinct lump on the right side of the heart’s chamber.

The patient also had a history of Takayasu’s Aorto-Arteritis– a rare condition that causes inflammation of the aorta, making the case even more complex. However, the team of doctors performed a complex open-heart surgery that involved replacing the patient’s aortic valve with a mechanical valve, removing the clots, and repairing the balloon-like swelling using a pericardial patch– a patch made from the tissue that surrounds the heart. Even though it was a very complicated surgery, it was done with great precision and care. The patient recovered well after the operation and was discharged from the hospital in good health.

Giving details of the case, Dr. K. M. Mandana, Director- Cardio Thoracic & Vascular Surgery, Fortis Hospital Anandapur said, “The patient’s condition was extremely critical when she was admitted. The swelling was unusually large and had extended to compress vital structures inside the heart. Such cases are rare and require precise planning and teamwork. We are glad the surgery went smoothly, and the patient is now doing well.”

Ashish Mukherjee, Facility Director, Fortis Hospital, Kolkata said, “This successful surgery once again demonstrates Fortis Kolkata’s clinical excellence in managing complex cardiac and vascular cases. Our expert medical team, advanced diagnostic capabilities and multidisciplinary approach ensure that patients receive world-class cardiac care, not just from India but also from neighboring countries.”
