Rashmi Group to Set Up ₹10,000-Crore Integrated Steel and Power Plant in Purulia

Kolkata, October 28, 2025: In a major boost to West Bengal’s industrial growth, Rashmi Group has announced plans to set up a 2.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) Integrated Steel Plant and a 400 MW Captive Power Plant at Jungle Sundari 1, Raghunathpur, in Purulia district. The West Bengal Government has completed the physical transfer of 938 acres for the project and granted it “Ultra Mega Project” status, ensuring fast-tracked clearances and facilitation.

The ₹10,000-crore project is part of Rashmi Group’s long-term expansion plan and is expected to create around 18,000 direct and indirect jobs, strengthening the state’s industrial base. The facility will manufacture TMT bars, wire rods, billets and structural steel, positioning Purulia as a new hub for high-quality steel production in eastern India.

Founded as a small-scale unit, Rashmi Group has already invested over ₹20,000 crore in West Bengal and plans to infuse another ₹10,000 crore by 2030. The company reported a gross turnover of ₹41,393 crore and a net worth of ₹26,791 crore, operating with a low-leverage model emphasizing reinvestment and conservative debt management.

Rashmi Group currently runs 8.3 MTPA of integrated iron and steel capacity across Kharagpur and Jhargram, excluding 0.2 MTPA of aluminium. Its portfolio spans pellets, pig iron, sponge iron, billets, TMT bars, wire rods, ductile iron pipes, aluminium, and cement (1.9 MTPA). It also generates 1,050 MW of power and is developing five coal mine blocks in West Bengal and Jharkhand. The Group’s existing operations employ over 50,000 people, with upcoming projects expected to add 40,000 more jobs.

The company is India’s largest and the world’s second-largest manufacturer of ductile iron pipes, supported by strong port-based logistics and export networks across China and Southeast Asia.

Acknowledging its contribution, the state government awarded Rashmi Group the “Ultra Mega Project” status. The CRISIL AA/Stable-rated conglomerate has received multiple honours, including the Times Bengal AwardExcellence in Steel & Cement Infrastructure Award, and the ASSOCHAM Business Excellence Award. A founding member of the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC), Rashmi Group emphasizes sustainable growth.

“The physical transfer of land marks a decisive step toward implementing our Purulia project. This ₹10,000-crore investment will anchor a new phase of industrial growth in West Bengal and create thousands of sustainable jobs,” said L. B. Chourasia, Joint President, Rashmi Group.
