Kolkata, August 20, 2026: The Board of Practical Training (Eastern Region) (BOPT-ER), an autonomous body under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, has announced that its annual flagship event, Regional Apprenticeship Day (RAD) 2026, will take place on September 5, 2026. This year’s edition is driven by the central theme: “Empowering MSMEs through NATS: Catalyzing Regional Growth via Structured Apprenticeships.”
The announcement was made by Dr S.M. Ejaz Ahmad, Director of BOPT(ER), alongside Shri Kailash Nath Mishra, Administrative-cum-Accounts Officer. Ahead of the signature event, BOPT(ER) highlighted how RAD 2026 serves as a powerful catalyst to expand the National Apprenticeship Training Scheme (NATS), bridge the industry-academia divide, and boost youth employability across Eastern India.
Structural Solutions for MSMEs
Recognizing that Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) face operational challenges such as compliance complexities, limited awareness, and capacity constraints BOPT(ER) is positioning them at the center of its regional growth strategy.
“A major focus of this year’s initiative is to expand the participation of MSMEs in the apprenticeship ecosystem,” said Dr S.M. Ejaz Ahmad, Director, BOPT(ER) “Through practical and scalable solutions, including cluster-based apprenticeship models and simplified registration processes, we aim to reduce these barriers and create financially viable apprenticeship opportunities for MSMEs.”
Key Strategic Highlights & Framework Innovations
- Academic Creditisation & AEDP: Restructuring university curricula through the Apprenticeship Embedded Degree/Diploma Programme (AEDP). This aligns with the National Higher Education Qualifications Framework (NHEQF), allowing students to earn formal academic credit through on-the-job training.
- AI & Digital Integration: Updating NATS training modules to integrate Artificial Intelligence (AI), automation, and digital workflows to match a modern, digital-first economy.
- Massive Digital Outreach: To expand beyond physical constraints, the event will be live-streamed to over 60,000+ stakeholders. This digital-first approach directly connects tier-2 and tier-3 industrial clusters, remote engineering colleges, polytechnics, and final-year students.
- Proven Track Record: BOPT(ER) successfully trained over 1.45 lakh apprentices in FY 2025-26 alone, moving steadily toward its vision of training over 15 lakh students.
Comprehensive Stakeholder Convergence
The event on September 5,2026 will serve as a central meeting point for regional leaders across multiple sectors:
- Industry Leaders: Premium corporate networks including the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry (BCC&I), ASSOCHAM, and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) to drive corporate partnerships.
- Academic & Governance Heads: Vice Chancellors of Central Universities, institutional heads, prominent Board of Governors (BOG) members, and State Education Department officials to ensure policy alignment.
- Ecosystem Recognition: The event will celebrate and felicitate outstanding apprentices, exemplary educational institutions, corporate establishments, and MSMEs that have demonstrated excellence in skill development.
